Looking over Squeaky Beach

Looking over Squeaky Beach

Last week the Affective Atlas team went to visit Wilson’s Promontory National Park. Myself and the other PhD student spent 3 days at the park – giving presentations on our progress to date (for me: not much), being shown areas of the park not usually accessible to the public, and touring the on-site offices.

Presentations

After arriving in the late afternoon we got straight into presentations.

Monique Elsley (my fellow PhD student) gave a talk about Web 2.0 and how it’s being used in other locations around the world for crowd sourcing of data for official use.

Cris Ramos from Parks Victoria spoke about how the organisation is coming around to the idea of engaging users, and talked about the how surveys and interviews with rangers were used in the development of a 5-year mobile strategy.

Jim Wheelan of Parks Victoria gave a presentation on his vision for knowledge management in the organisation, and spoke about the importance of being able to utilize the connections people have between each other to find the knowledge you need, not necessarily capturing that knowledge.

As for me, after an overview of the reading I’ve done to date I talked about how how our observational and user research will inform design decisions for the project aspect of our PhDs.

The discussion

There was some great discussions after the presentations that gave us a lot to think about and process. It was great seeing the progress Monique has made, and Jim and Cris’s contributions sparked a lot of ideas amongst Monique and I, and the broader team. I’ll write a few more posts as I go through and process the main points.

For now, some more photos to enjoy:
